Fierce, Flexy & Fifty!
Sharing my chats with Joanna about our thoughts on mindset and the love of movement at 50!
“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.”
Mark Twain
One of my amazing flexors has just turned the incredible age of 50, and I wanted us to celebrate and share this moment with you. This woman is a force — and because you are reading this, you will also likely be a force of nature, so it feels right to share this with you.
I hear people say all the time that you should surround yourself with those who uplift you, help you grow, and support you in becoming the most authentic version of yourself. I created my online flexy family to create that sense of belonging here — because it’s shared interests, shared values, and shared spirit that brings my flexors together. Community is powerful. And even though we’re not physically in the same room, sharing these moments and celebrating each other’s stories is what lifts us all.
Working with my flexy students all inspires me constantly. They’re dreamers. They’re ambitious and they all work so hard. Giving up simply isn’t in their vocabulary.
Joanna turning 50 is a moment for all of us to cheer, because whether you remember turning 50 or you’re looking ahead to it, she is the kind of woman you’d want to grow into — looking gorgeous, in the splits, with a pint in one hand. The epitome of living fully, not taking yourself too seriously, working hard, and balancing it all with joy and laughter. All in one picture.
I once listened to a podcast that said age isn’t about numbers — it’s about fragility. Keep yourself strong, mobile, and mentally sharp, and you will experience those numbers very differently as they rise.
Joanna and I were talking about age as a privilege.
Not long ago, she went through a very shaky time where future birthdays were not guaranteed. So now, every birthday feels like a miracle — a gift, a privilege, borrowed time she gets to keep living fully.
I want to keep reminding myself of that. With every year that passes, we witness more, learn more, experience more. Aging is an honour — not everyone gets a go at it, and it is never guaranteed.
Yes, our bodies won’t always feel like they did in our twenties. But humans are extraordinary at adapting. That’s what we do — to survive, to thrive, to keep moving. We should move differently as toddlers, children, young adults, and older adults. Expecting your body to behave like your 21‑year‑old self is setting yourself up for disappointment. Biology tells us clearly that things change — but that youth is replaced with wisdom. You learn to move differently. You become interested in different qualities of movement. You evolve. And that evolution is magical. Learning how you age is part of the privilege of aging — you get to witness your own transformation.
We spoke about how movement is a mindset — how you treat yourself mentally and physically. Joanna is a true example of listening to her body, respecting it, and enjoying life through movement, challenge, and curiosity. There’s no secret. Just interest, consistency, and the willingness to keep exploring what you’re passionate about.
She’s working on her splits. She’s working on her foot‑to‑head. She’s showing up with consistency, curiosity, and courage. And she’s still achieving huge, exciting, bendy things.
It’s such a powerful reminder that age is not what makes us feel older.
What makes someone feel that they are getting older is fragility, fear, and giving up on themselves — and none of my flexors are doing that. Every single one of them is choosing strength, choosing movement, choosing growth, choosing to keep learning what their bodies can do.
Joanna’s journey is proof that flexibility is not a “young person’s game.” It’s a human game. A nervous system game. A consistency game. A “how much love and attention can I give my body?” game.
And she’s winning — not because she’s 50, but because she’s committed.
So this is your reminder:
✨ You are not too old.✨ You are not too late.✨ Your body is not done learning.
✨ You can still create new shapes, new strength, new softness.
Your age is not your limit — your belief is.
Here’s to Joanna, and here’s to every single one of you who keeps showing up, stretching, strengthening, wobbling, laughing, and discovering what’s possible.
I’m so proud of this community.
With love and admiration, Kathryn
