How I Mastered The Splits: 3 Simple Steps That Transformed My Flexibility Journey

Everyone begins as a beginner.

“Success is about dedication. You may not be where you want to be or do what you want to do when you're on the journey. But you've got to be willing to have vision and foresight that leads you to an incredible end.”

My Splits Journey

Nearly a decade ago, I graduated from a contemporary dance school and secured a position within a performance development diploma touring company. I was over the moon! This was an incredible opportunity to advance as a performer, and the demanding nature of the extreme dance style pushed my physical limits in ways I loved. However, as my training progressed, I became increasingly concerned about the impact on my body, especially given my hypermobility. With a desire to maintain a long and healthy career free from injury, I recognized the importance of understanding how to train safely and sustainably.

As I ventured further into aerial hoop and contortion, my goal was not only to deepen my flexibility but to ensure I was progressing in a way that supported my body’s unique needs. I was aware that my splits were not square, extremely uneven and I was not protecting my hyper extension in my knees. I understood the dangers this could have on my body and the impact it would have on my progression. It became a pivotal time in my career where I knew I had to take action to make sure I was on the right path for the future.

I want to share with you what I believe are the key elements for you to also conquer your flexibility goals from my experiences.

Here are my 3 Simple Steps!

  1. Research & learn from the best!

Working with a coach was a turning point for me. I wanted to learn from the best, make the most of my time, and most importantly stay safe whilst I trained and performed. Different coaches can have different opinions and approaches, so the more I gathered information from different professionals, the more I could piece together what felt right for my own journey.

Have someone

more experienced than you around.

I think it’s so important to have someone more experienced than you around—someone who’s willing to guide you, push you when you need it, but also keep you grounded. And honestly, having a coach who knows when to pull you back is just as valuable. Sometimes we push too hard without realizing it, and a good mentor can help you avoid setbacks and make steady, safe progress.

2. Achieving goals is rarely a solo journey—lean on support, advice, and encouragement from the amazing people around you.

Having accountability keeps me on track, motivated, and stops me from procrastinating. That could mean having your own diary to hold yourself accountable, or having accountability from those around you. Having someone to check in with, celebrate wins, or help adjust my goals has made all the difference. Whether it’s a coach, a friend, or even an app, that extra support has been key to my progress.

Even small bits of guidance or motivation can go a long way, and I really appreciate having people in my corner.

What does accountability in action look like?

I found my accountability in all sorts of places such as…

  • Going to weekly classes- this way teachers and friends expect you to turn up and work hard on the same goals and share the same experience as those around you.

  • Sign up to bigger challenges with others- do you have a competition or performances that you could work towards with others?

  • A coach- work with a coach to complete homework, or a training schedule with their guidance

  • Have a buddy with you! Have someone to go through the journey with, they can help you as you help them - share the wisdom!

  • Join a community of like minded people. Whether that’s a local club, or online community, get involved and meet others who have the same interests as you!

3. Get organised!

Being organized is such a calming and confidence-boosting habit. It really helps me stay focused on the big picture while still keeping track of all the little details along the way. I’m not always the best at keeping it up, but I do my best to try and stick with it!

Design your perfect

training plan.

A solid training plan gives purpose and direction. I have less energy needed on planning and making daily decisions, and my goals and habits become my lifestyle choice instead. We all know that flexibility is not gained overnight, and so we are in it for the long run! This is why I aim to build habits that are long-lasting and easy to maintain over time.
